11/17/63, MEXI 6931, ref DIR 83179, Mexico City Station to CIA HQ, TYPIC BEDOX: "Chief of Station comment: Thirkist, TYPIC officer, arriving...at 1400 16 Nov...Olszewski still in Mexi and still in LIEMBRACE surveillance. Plans trip to Acapulco but unknown when. Gustafson failed to show on 16 November. Thirkist phoned him in Miami, was told Gustafson arriving Mexi 2340 on 17 November and can stay through 20 November. Tentatively plan have Gustafson call Olszewski first thing 18 November under pretext he had called him in Havana and was told Olszewski in Mexi, searched several Mexi hotels until found him. Assuming Olszewski agrees meet Gustafson, Thirkist will come along as long-time friend of Gustafson with whom vacationing in Mexico. When Gustafson departs Mexi, Thirkist will stay close to Olszewski and continue assessment and elicitation. Will not make direct recruitment pitch until reasonably sure Olszewski receptive."

11/19/63: Cable from Mexico City to Director: TYPIC BEDOX: Report from Gustafson on meeting Olszewski. Gustafson worked in the Psychiatry Department of the University of Miami and his boss was Dr. John Caldwell. Olszewski was considering defecting to the United States for economic reasons. An article that touched on his thinking was written by Henry Raymont of the New York Times on 11/18/63.

11/20/63, MEXI 6964, Mexico City Station to CIA HQ, ref DIR 83740, TYPIC BEDOX: "Thirkist, Gustafson, Olszewski and wives spent social evening 19 November (Olszewski failed to show for lunch) at which no business discussed but good Thirkist-Olszewski rapport established. After considerable hesitation Olszewski accepted Gustafson's invitation stay at Hilton in Acapulco with all expenses paid. He arrived with family at the Hilton morning 20 November. Gustafson, wife and Thirkist arriving Hilton afternoon 20 November. Litynski remains in Mexi...Recommend we take (Olszewski) for detailed debriefing and possible use against Sov bloc targets in (Cuba)."

Olszewski reacted negatively to recruitment pitch but agreed to debriefing with (unknown) payment 'by the hour'. Did not show for first session but has promised meet Thirkist's latter's hotel at 1100 local 22 Nov. Olszewski plans depart Mexi via Cubana flight of 25 Nov. Station aware Thirkist qualified for this debriefing. However request OPIM (note: Operational Immediate) any requirements HQS feels Thirkist may not be aware. FYI: Thirkist as of now does not know precisely what job is held by Olszewski, or extent access."
