Pseudonym: Pochron, Raymond
104-10182-10057: WIROGUE, (VOL III).
8/19/60 Memorandum for the Record: "At 1400 hours, 19 August, SR/DOB case officer Fred Kirkpatrick and Jerry Pochron from Defection Coordinators Office of CIA met with Clay Calendar and Jim Myers of TSD/IB re documentations arrangements and travel routing for possible resettlement of AESENTINEL agent AEASPIC (note: also known as WIROGUE-1, true name David Tzitzichvili)...TSD/1B suggested that (AEASPIC) be sent by black flight from here to West Germany, and there surfaced with an altered Greek passport, which TSD/1B now has available...as (AEASPIC) has no Greek language capability." Listed as 201-233477 - matching 104-10182-10069, which refers to WIROGUE-1 as 201-233477.
104-10260-10324: CABLE RE: RODWICK AND POCHRON MET TODAY WITH AGENT SUPERVISOR
3/29/62: Cable from JMWAVE to Director. Pochron established as point of contact for Customs. Pochron listed as "C/CI". This may mean he is the C/CI for JMWAVE. "Rodwick/Al Cox and Pochron met today with agent supervisor and chief collector U.S. Customs. Re turnover confiscated materiel...current inventories materiel consists of only three Czech submachine guns. This due (to the) fact that Miami Customs currently under instructions from Tampa to return all small arms including rifles to (Cubans) who admit same after being admitted into country." Handwritten note appears to say "PSM" - Bill Harvey's shorthand for "please see me". The note adds the initials "hag" and the word "secur", and a handwritten notation to "Diosdado" - the customs agent known as "AMSWIRL-1" and who is discussed in memo.
104-10236-10208: MEMO TO: NEW INTELLIGENCE GROUP BEING FORMED BY THE CUBAN REVOLUTIONARY COUNCIL
05/23/62: Memo from FI Branch to Chief, CI Branch: (Signed: Henry J. Sloman). This is a clear view of Sloman's signature. Notice the J curves round so that it almost looks like a digit 9. This appears very similar to the J. in the Routing and Record Sheets signed by the Chief of Counterintelligence (CI) at JMWAVE. See January 11, 1963 and March 20, 1963 below for comparisons.
06/05/62: Dispatch from COS, JMWAVE to Chief, Task Force W: Page 2: ..."6. Subject states that he has been accused or suspected by most Cubans on the Keys as being affiliated with U.S. Border Patrol, the Sheriff's Office of Monroe County, and as working with and for the FBI and/or CIA. Subject said he has never mentioned his affiliation with CIA to anyone other than CIAers. Subject further reported that he had a wonderful working relationship with Donald P. Slingland of JMBARR and that if he is allowed to continue working with Slingland, they can do a tremendous job for CIA..." Page 3: ..."15. (Raymond) Pochron's home telephone number and address were furnished to Subject with the suggestion that in the event anything happened on the Keys and he could not contact the Chief of Base, JMBARR, or Mr. Slingland, the Security Officer at that Base, that he telephone Pochron regardless of the hour. Subject agreed to do this..."
7/27/62: UFGA-4820 dispatch from Chief of Station JMWAVE Ted Shackley to Chief, TFW, William Harvey, with originating officer CI George Watts: "He was arrested (on 3/21/60)...with Rundquist, Shergalis, and the Montesino family following an abortive attempt by Shergalis and Rundquist to evacuate by airplane Damaso Montesino Alvarez, a police official in the Cuban government. Subject said he was arrested and held in prison under the name Miguel Sanchez...On 31 May 1962 AMOT-6/Marcos Diaz Lanz reported the following to his JMWAVE case officer Henry Sloman/Tony Sforza...Jose Carbonell Marrero said he had worked as a G-2 agent for the past three years and that he had been dispatched to the United States to perform an espionage mission...to report on anti-Castro elements and to collect information on Rundquist to support charges that he was an American agent. That Fidel Castro Ruz himself had given him (Carbonell) instructions...Jose Carbonell Marrero wants to be put in contact with (FBI) or (CIA) for recruitment as a double agent...Carbonell was described (by FBI to JMWAVE) as unreliable and a 20 year record of performance as a Communist Party (USA) functionary, a Fidelista, and a G-2 agent. (FBI) is most anxious to obtain evidence upon which FBI could take action to strip Carbonell of his citizenship and deport him to Cuba...(FBI) further described Carbonell as an individual who is not trusted by anti-Castro Cubans and G-2 alike...(He claimed to be in touch with commandos in Matanzas)...only one person, he said, could make contact with the 'sugar cane commandos, Irma Suarez Fernandez, who lives in Marianao and who may be reached at the address Cardenas 73, Habana, the home of her father...There are several indications that he was and is a G-2 agent...it appears that at least Masferrer was convinced that he was in fact a G-2 agent...It is planned to get the word around the Cuban community, through the AMOTS, that Subject is unreliable and possibly a G-2 agent."
7/27/62 dispatch - CONTINUED. In Cuban prison from March 1960-May 1961 of his participation in the Howard Rundquist/William Shergalis flight. Carbonell said he was G-2 and wanted to be a double agent for the Americans, but when asked to provide info on G-2 he said he was not a G-2 agent. He said he was G-2 in order to obtain other things - support for a resistance group that needed "arms, ammunition, medical supplies, etc." The conclusions reached by the reporting officer were 1) there is nothing to be done; 2) Interrogate him for several days to see if he is actually a G-2 agent; 3) He is trying to ingratiate himself with the anti-Castro community in Miami; 4) We will let the anti-Castro community know he appears to be a G-2 agent - he needs to be interrogated for at least three days, anything less is useless. 7/27/62 dispatch from CI George Watts at JMWAVE to Chief, Task Force W: Report from folder entitled "Marcos Diaz Lanz", it appears that he is the source for this background information on Jose Carbonell Marrero. The coordinating officer is "C/CI Raymond L. Pochron". If this is JMWAVE's CI division, this is a significant development because this division is generally addressed as AMOTs rather than CI. On page 3 of 10, AMOT-6's case officer is reported to be Henry Sloman/Tony Sforza. Could Sforza be Pochron?
12/10/62: Dispatch from Chief, Task Force W to COS, JMWAVE: "1. Attached herewith are five additional chapters of the untranslated copy of the proposal for the establishment of a Cuban Urban Police. 2. AMPAID-4 (probably either Ramon Hernandez Cabrera or Bernardo Martinez) expects to submit the completed document on or about 12 December 1962.
