10/21/63: Cable from Paris to Director: Slugline RYBAT TYPIC AMLASH: "1. 17 Oct AMLASH/1 and AMWHIP/1 initiated contact with Kyminghham (Handwritten: Red Stent). AMLASH/1 in private talk reiterated his desire talk to high level ODYOKE (U.S. Government) official. Basically he wants assurances that ODYOKE will support him if his enterprise is successful. Does not want to have to content with Batista and his followers or some of the Cuban exiles, would prefer live under AMTHUG than a return to pre-AMTHUG days. Repeated his earlier statement he will probably implement his plan regardless what ODYOKE decides. 2. 19 Oct AMWHIP contacted Kyminghham and reported essentially what AMLASH/1 said 17 Oct..."

(The record does not reveal why Sanchez went to Paris in the face of Cubela's stated wish not to see him. The letter may have been written during a spell of temporary depression. Station officers were already in contact with Cubela when Sanchez arrived). Also participating in the meetings were John (Red) Stent and Richard Long. At the time of these meetings it was discovered that the French were unilaterally keeping Cubela under surveillance. CIA informed the French that our contacts with Cubela were for the purpose of defecting him..." - - Page 88: ..."17 October 1963: Red Stent cabled the results of a meeting with Cubela and Tepedino. Cubela, in a private conversation with Stent, reiterated his desire to speak with a high-level U.S. Government official. 05/31/74: Memo for the record from James McTighe, DC/WH/7: Subject: Agency's Retiree Involvement with Abaco Independence Group: "1. Through the intermediary of Robert Brown, DC/EA, and retired staffer Jack 'Red' Stent, I was put in touch on 22 May 1974 with John Muldoon, another retired staffer who is now nominal vice-president of a Washington-based firm called 'Security Consultants International.' Muldoon made the contact with me apparently on the advice of Bob Brown and Red Stent whose counsel he sought in an effort to protect himself from the possible implications of his involvement with a group promoting the independence of the Bahamian Commonwealth island of Abaco. We met at 1100 hours at 'Tony's' on L street and 18th N.W. in downtown Washington. Red Stent was there to introduce me to Muldoon but he did not participate in the discussion..." - - Page 4: ..."6. To cap off the story, Red Stent invited us to lunch at the Class Reunion on Eye Street and 18th. When Muldoon and I arrived to meet Stent we found him ensconced at a corner table with three other people. Red rushed over to inform us that he would be introducing me as a colleague of his from AEROJET. He then presented me to Werbell, Werbell's date Patricia Botond and Cecil Brownlow of 'Aviation Weekly'...Miss Botond, as it turned out was reared in Shanghai, China, at the same time as Stent. Red had attended school with her brother - the German School in Shanghai...Brownlow had helped Red obtain aerial photos of the ChiCom consulate compound in Geneva in the early 1960's when Red was stationed in Paris. When Werbell had wearied of the reminiscences of Stent and Botond and had managed to hustle his prey off to a private table, Stent revealed to Brownlow that I was not AEROJET but CIA..."
