104-10174-10016: CONVERSATIONS WITH HARRY HERMSDORF RE JUNE COBB
08/01/60: Memo for the record from Jean Pierson: "1. On 28 July Harry Hermsdorf informed Jean Pierson that he was going to Habana on Sunday, the 31st, and would contact June Cobb. He was reminded that the Branch was not in accord with his contacting her in Cuba. He replied that Col. King was interested in the case, and besides 'he wanted some stamps autographed by Castro' and June could get it done. I discussed the proposed trip with Clark Simmons (see 2022 release below) who suggested that I see Harry again to clarify the Branch feeling about the Cuba contact, to determine just what the trip was really for, and as a last resort, if Harry intended to go anyway, to arrive at some means of communicating with Cobb since the plan he had set up with her previously could not be satisfactorily backstopped...He (note: Harry Hermsdorf) also said that he would be travelling under Austrian papers as Heinrich Heubner from Jamaica and would arouse no suspicion..." - - - 2022 release: https://www.archives.gov/files/research/jfk/releases/2022/104-10174-10016.pdf
104-10175-10080: SUBJECT: CONFERENCE ON AMUPAS-1 CASE
09/15/60: Memo for the record from Clark W. Simmons (see 2022 release below), Chief, WH/4/CI: "1. On Monday, 12 September 1960, Colonel J. C. King, Rudy Gomez, J.D. Esterline, Harry Hermsdorf and Clark Simmons met in Mr. Gomez's office to discuss the desirability of a case officer contact with AMUPAS-1 (Viola June Cobb) in Cuba at this time. 2. Mr. Simmons and Mr. Esterline pointed out that Mr. Hermsdorf had traveled frequently throughout Latin America and that he had made numerous operational contacts; that he had used two separate identities in previous visits to Cuba; that Subject had been indiscreet in her claims to relative strangers that she had intelligence connections. In light of this, they opposed any operation contact in Cuba between Subject and/or Marie Witowska/AMKIRK-1 at this time. 3. It was agreed that in view of the above circumstances, Mr. Hermsdorf would not make contact with Subject or Marie Witowska in Cuba, but would telephone Maria Witowska from Venezuela and ask her to meet with him in that country." - - - 2022 release: https://www.archives.gov/files/research/jfk/releases/2022/104-10175-10080.pdf
