His wife, Violet Smith Tonahill, died in 1997 after 56 years of marriage. Survived by six children: Mildred Elmore of Austin; Rebecca Tonahill of Houston, Susie Tonahill Hile of Ausin, Howard Worth Smith Tonahill of Littleton, Colorado, Joe H. Tonahill, Jr., of Vail, Colorado, and Anne Tonahill Smith of Jasper, TX.
