04/21/61: Dispatch from COS, Helsinki to Chief, WE: Subject: VALINK/Operations Harry Alfona Sundvik: "1...According to the VALINKS two of the three are listed as having a number of arrests each, including manslaughter, drunkenness, theft, etc., and the third could not be identified. These obviously were not investigated very closely at the time Sundvik applied for employment. On 5 April VALINK surveillance was placed on Sundvik (again with the Charge's concurrence). He was followed each evening after he left the embassy and on 10 April, after it was learned that Sundvik was driving to the Soviet Union for a four-day trip, he was followed...to the Finnish-Soviet border point...Two VALINK detectives were on hand here to observe the crossing. They reported a routine border crossing, that no customs inspection was made, and that Sundvik met two Soviet soldiers at the border station (on the Soviet side) before continuing from there...Attached are translations of the VALINK surveillance reports and a report of the border crossing which we have received to date..."

SUBJ gave occupation as lawyer, DOB 19 Jan 33 and is listed as ZRPENNY (activity to counter Cuban student participation in communist-sponsored world youth festival in Helsinki in 1962) committee worked. 2. VALINK/9 also told Weibust that reliable VALINK informant in Finnish CP will be guide for PBRUMEN (Cuba) delegates. VALINK/9 not briefed on matter but we can bring general KUBARK (CIA) interest in PBRUMENs to his attention and levy requirements re their housing, movements, associations etc through VALINK/9 to his informant. Attachment A, forwarded herewith, is a VATALK/1 translation of the VALINK interrogation of Enrique Antonio Felix Beloyra and John Koch. The report was received from VALINK/4, who actually did the questioning. Copies of subjects' passports, also received from VALINK/4, are forwarded as Attachment B herewith. 2. When handling Roodine (Frank Friberg) these documents, VALINK/4 said that some of the information in the interrogation report was purposely distorted, probably to protect the lenient action of the VALINKs in matters concerning the festival and counter-activity. The only extant copies of this report are in the VALINK files. Walter R. Glastonbury."

On 8 August Smunhook asked Roodine (Frank Friberg) to his office where he then introduced Roodine to SMOTH (MI-6) CI chief Hinton. Latter said he on swing through Scandinavia to visit stations told Roodine AELADLE (Anatoliy Golitsyn) now in PBPRIME (U.S.). Recounted incidents in handling and his own involvement in negotiating for AELADLE move to England. Remarked that at lunch with VALINK-1 on 7 October, VALINK-1 had asked whereabouts of AELADLE whereupon Hinton replied that he back in PBPRIME. 2. He also brought up Vassall and Paques cases, AELADLE role and how arrests made. 3. Smunhook raised name of Anne Marie Snellman (handwritten: 201-321337) (see HELS-2015) and asked Hinton why nothing has been done. Hinton appeared not to be familiar with case but said he would raise it with KUBARK (CIA). Whether he meant in WASH or London was not clear."

VALINK-6 reports subject stayed at Torni Hotel in HELS from 10 to 11 Oct 59 and then moved to Klaus Kurki Hotel where he stayed until 15 October apparently waiting for visa to be issued him by Soviet Consulate in Helsinki. He traveled to USSR via train crossing at Vainikkala on 15 October 59. 2. Since HQs has record all travelers between Finland and USSR (VATRIP lists) suggest you scan these for subjects return travel. C/S Comment: Requested traces on Lee Harvey Oswald."

Finn air flights from STOC on 10 Oct arrived HELS at 1222 hours, 1500 hours and 1655 hours. 3. Above from VALINK/1. C/S Comment: *Action unit determined as though indicator REDWOOD not used. ** Hqs asked Helsinki if they could determine if Oswald arrived Torni Hotel 10 Oct. *** Only direct flight from London to Helsinki on 10 Oct 59 was Finn air flight 852 which arrived Hels at 2333 hours."
