Return to Main Crypts Page

Definition:
Unknown identity. A dispatch in March, 1954, stated that ESOTERIC was formerly known as ESCONSON.
Status:
Unknown
Discussion:
ESOTERIC was mentioned in two cables in December of 1953 in relation to ESQUIRE. According to a report in December, 1953, ESOTERIC was an American citizen who was married to ESOTROPE (who was formerly ESCONSON-1). ESOTROPE was a female, therefore, ESOTERIC was a male. The report stated that ESOTERIC was not being used at that present time except as a witting informant. "ESOTERIC originally handled ESCONSON-2 but asked to be relieved from this because it interfered with his commercial activities."

Of the agents mentioned above, ESCROW is of outstanding value from the standpoint of psychological barometer work. In addition to ESCROW, however, Station Guatemala is utilizing the services of: 1) ESOTROPE, who was born in Guatemala and became a U.S. citizen following her marriage to ESOTERIC, an American citizen. At present ESOTROPE is being used to prepare a psychological barometer report which can be used as a guide for PP activities. 2) ESOTERIC is not being used at present except as a witting informant. However, he would be willing to engage in any activities which did not take up too much of his time and which he did not consider as possibly embarrassing to him. ESOTERIC originally handled ESCONSON-2 but asked to be relieved from this because it interfered with his commercial activities..."

12/30/53: Cable from Guatemala City to Director: RYBAT PBSUCCESS: "1. ESQUIRE recently gave embassy officer info in general term: Salama uprising, lack of coordination among anti-commie groups, arms, funds etc. without mentioning support from U.S. Government or any person by name. Indicated he favors Calligeris (Carlos Castillo Armas). Said if he could see indication of outside support which would eliminate problem of collecting funds locally and particularly give members of organization feeling were not alone he would be willing to attempt rebuild an anti-government movement. 2. ESQUIRE is of the wealthy class in which he has many contacts. Our needs for local exchange require use every possible secure medium. 3. We propose use him through ESOTERIC for that purpose with understanding he not engage any specific conspiratorial activity. Advise."

03/10/54: Air dispatch from COS, Guatemala to LINCOLN: Subject: Operational KUFIRE Tasks, PBSUCCESS: "1. In compliance with the instructions set forth in reference dispatch, there is being transmitted herewith in duplicate the first in a series of the 'Weekly KUFIRE (Intelligence) Operational Reports'...Cyrus E. Burnette." - - - Page 3: FT/3: ESOTROPE: Responsible Officer - George L. Tranger (John Doherty)...ESOTERIC was formerly known as ESCONSON and ESOTROPE was ESCONSON-1 before they withdrew from the ESCONSON project in July 1953 (HGG-A-357, not sent to LINCOLN). HGG-A-357 noted that both would continue to cooperate with this station on a voluntary basis as unpaid informants, and ESOTROPE would assist in the preparation of KUGOWN (Psychological and Paramilitary Staff) materials, translation work, etc., and would be reimbursed at the rate of (REDACTION) per month from ESPLANADE project funds. The newly assigned FT/3 tasks therefore represent increased activity on the part of ESOTROPE, but she has agreed to undertake the desired coverage...Except for such prominent organizations as the communist-like Alianza Femenina Guatemlateca (AFG), our coverage of women's activities and organizations has not been complete in the past. As instructed, ESOTROPE will concentrate on the development of psych/intelligence relating to major women's groups. At the same time she will begin a study of the entire target area to provide basic information essential to evaluating current reports and possibly to plan future action...It is doubtful that ESOTERIC will make an appreciable contribution in the collection of economic intelligence. Since his withdrawal from the ESCONSON operation he has helpfully served as a channel of communications with ESOTROPE and has occasionally volunteered information regarding economic matters..."

Foreign Relations of the United States, 1952-1954: Guatemala: Current Section: 222. 6/22/54-Telegram From the CIA Station in Guatemala to Operation PBSUCCESS Headquarters in Florida

06/22/54: Telegram from Guatemala Station to Operation PBSUCCESS Headquarters in Florida: "929. Ref LINC 4165. (2) 1. No indication ref true at this moment. 2. Reports from ESCONSON 2 and 7 indicated Commies and Commie dominated workers claim they intend attack embassies of unfriendly govts and especially PBPRIME (U.S.) embassy where expect seize documentation proving ODYOKE (U.S. Government)–Calligeris (Carlos Castillo Armas) collaboration. 3. Strafing attack morning 22 June described by competent PBPRIME observer as pathetic. One small oil tank on outskirts of city hit but fire out in 20 minutes. Flak not suppressed. Plane apparently did not come lower than thousand feet at anytime. ESAGE, ESPERANCE. 4. Public impression is that attacks show incredible weakness, lack of decision, and fainthearted effort. Calligeris efforts widely described as farce. Anti Commie anti govt morale near vanishing point. ESPERANCE, ESQUIRE, ESTIMATOR, ESCONSON. 5. One lone plane attacking half heartedly at this stage of game gives impression weakness. If Adam (Guatemala City) targets to be attacked, suggest some show real strength. Display this morning far more damaging our cause than to govt and Commies. Govt widely accusing ODYOKE of being involved in this insurrection and the people believe this to be so. Weakness and lack of decision is attributed to ODYOKE and will be reflected in attitude of people and especially of Commies and pro govt irregulars toward lives and property of PBPRIME residents in WSBURNT (Guatemala). Only force and decision will be respected. Words are useless."
