104-10055-10073: AQUATIC /USE OF THE VLS-2 TRIGGER DEVICE AT THE LIERODE BASEHOUSE
11/7/63, Dispatch from Chief, WH Division to Chief, KURIOT, attn: Photographic Branch. HMMA-22433. Reference: HMMA-22307, paragraph 5c.: "1. The VLS-2 Trigger Device, installed at the LIERODE basehouse to cover the Consulate entrance, is performing well, with little false triggering. The 500 mm lens on the VLS-2 had to be replaced by the 6 inch lens for wider target coverage...Concerned with the consumption of film and the necessity of reloading the film twice daily, (LIFEUD-22/Alberto Cesar Rodriguez Gallego) devised a system where the VLS-2 would only photograph people leaving but not entering the target building...It was found that since Mexicans generally wear dark clothing and have black hair, they can pass into the office without triggering the VLS-2. When a person leaves by this entrance, the man's shirt or face will trigger the device...this system will not work when a person enters the building with light clothing...The Robot Star camera system which was given to L-22 with the VLS-2 broke down after four days of photographing. PARMUTH/Robert Zambernardi replaced this with another robot. Five days later the second camera failed to advance properly. It is requested that a substitute camera be shipped to the Station as soon as possible to replace the Robot Star camera on this project..."
