Cryptonym: AMTOAD-1
See 104-10220-10292: 201-267698 is identified here as Angel Aparicio Laurencio - he is identified as AMTOAD-1 in WAVE documents. See 1994.06.24.14:30:04:280005, pp. 81-82 and 104-10236-10271.
A reasonable conclusion is that Angel Aparicio Laurencio was the alias of Arias, who was originally LITAINT-5 before Sam Orrison (Stanley Moos) lost the two briefcases that contained his identity.
Note that David Morales resided in Los Angeles from 1958-1960, traveling from Los Angeles to Florida to the American embassy in Havana.
After Arias defected, he then joined an anti-Castro group in early 1962 in Mexico (see 124-90090-10041); became an informant in Brazil; when he was kicked out of Brazil in 1962, he moved to Chile.

Cuban vice consul in Los Angeles, resigned and moved to Mexico. (In fact, he defected - why does the author, Ann Goodpasture, omit this salient fact?) Goodpasture gives the number as 201-287689 - is this an accident, or a deliberate attempt to deceive? He was in touch with LITAMIL-1 and recruited by the Mexico City station. The operation folded after the loss of two suitcases - undoubtedly the "Samuel Orrison incident" where an officer lost these items that blew the cover of many officers and agents.

Circa 1962, progress report written by CIA officer: Defectors in the last two years include "Julian Arias Prado, Cuban vice-consul from Los Angeles".
104-10298-10066: AMTOAD-1's Exploitation of AMSTRUT-1 for Propaganda Purposes
8/29/62 memo from Ronald? in Rio to Director, handwritten note identifies Julian Arias, as AMTOAD-1. the posts below shows him with the number 201-287688 - but the first "8" looks like it has been written over another number, possibly "9", that would make it 201-267698. Document also refers to AMTOAD-1's "cover". See 104-10220-10292: 201-267698 is identified here as Angel Aparicio Laurencio - he is identified as AMTOAD-1 in WAVE documents. See 1994.06.24.14:30:04:280005, pp. 81-82 and 104-10236-10271. A reasonable conclusion is that Angel Aparicio Laurencio was the alias of Arias. "Since arrival (in) Rio as AMBUD representative, AMTOAD-1 has been in contact with (AMSTRUT-1) using her on welfare cases and to support his demarches at foreign office. This in line with cover of both and harmed security (of) neither, even after (AMSTRUT-1) made early June trip to Miami and returned." Using AMSTRUT-1 for publicity re arrival of Soviet troops and "bombarding Havana suburb".
10/26/62 cable from Rio to Director, slugline GYROSE: "Brazilian Ministry of Justice announced that AMTOAD-1, AMBARB-32, and Nelida Garmendia would be given fifteen days (to) leave Brazil because of their attacks on government policy and Prime Minister Hermes Lima personally. Reaction to threatened expulsion promising. AMTOAD flooded with phone calls offering help. Visited by groups of university and secondary school students who will visit newspapers, Hermes Lima, and Ministry of Justice to protest persecution (of) anti-Fidelistas. Two federal deputies want (to) defend AMTOAD's case in court. Telegrams being sent to Goulart protesting action. AMTOAD told Witherby he phoned AMBUD who instructed him do whatever 'our friends' want. If deported AMTOAD not go to (US). Will ask (to) go (to) Argentina. Doubt that deportation will happen in fifteen days. Station plans (to) drag out case with legal action for maximum psych exploitation."

10/30/62 cable from Rio de Janeiro to Director, slugline GYROSE: "KUWOLF (progaganda) action will have (IDEN A - Nelida Garmendia, rep for Directorio Revolucionario Magisterial in Brazil) have optional operation to obstruct deportation and get sympathy. If unable to get deportation called off, subjects will leave 10 November. Argentines willing to give AMTOAD-1 (IDEN B - Angel Aparicio Laurencio, rep in Brazil for Consejo Revolucionario de Cuba) and family visas. How wish Buen contact? Feel would be better have AMBARB-32 (Carlos Valdesuso Rodriguez, pres of Directorio Revolucionario Estudiantil in Brazil) go anywhere but (US) directly. After couple days third country can apply for (US) visa..."

104-10236-10377: AMTOAD-1 ARRIVED SAGO WITH WIFE AND CHILD
11/30/62 GYROSE memo apparently from Alice Caponong: "AMTOAD-1 arrived SAGO (Santiago, Chile) with wife and child 26 November. Sago officer met 29 November using alias Martin...can addresses clarify this as well explain who paid AMTOAD-1 for what in past and commitments to him? Meanwhile Sago will pass 200 dollars to him as emergency and charge FURIOSO-X pending other info." FURIOSO-X appears to be a fund run by C/CI Jim Angleton. It's the name of his college literary magazine. A subsequent GYROSE memo to "Director" states that he will be given money with no accounting and a handwritten note (from Harvey?) remarks, "I hope that this doesn't come back to bite us." http://www.maryferrell.org/showDoc.html?docId=13343&search=amtoad#relPageId=2&tab=page
Lawrence Charron memo, 3/22/63: "AMTOAD-1's main efforts re Cuban-Brazilian relations so far is a pamphlet distributed in February and early March 1963 which he himself wrote...the pamphlet treats (sic) of Brazilian neutralism and pro-Castro tendencies as well as the specific problem of Cuban asylees in the Brazilian Embassy in Habana (ending with the specific example of the recent death of asylee Ramon Padilla Perez under suspicious circumstances in that embassy.)...the pamphlet is serious, worthwhile propaganda."
