Cryptonym: AMRAVEL-1

Definition:
Unknown identity. A dispatch in June, 1962, cited AMRAVEL-1's 201 number as 201-291225.
Status:
Unknown
Discussion:
A CIA document in 1962 listed the likes of Marino Lopez Blanco (201-291226), Gustavo Ribeaux Figueres (201-291227), Elio Alvarez Lopez (201-291228), and Roberto Sanchez Alvarez (201-291229) as having 201 numbers very close to AMRAVEL-1's. Of these individuals, two had close connections to the Cuban judiciary, Elio Alvarez and Gustavo Ribeaux, while Marino Lopez Blanco was a former Cuban senator and consular official. Therefore, it is possible that AMRAVEL-1 had links to the Cuban judiciary or former political and/or diplomatic ties. Jose Morell Romero, who was mentioned in some of the documents below, was significantly involved in anti-Castro activities, and is probably worth keeping in mind.

He calls La Cabana the 'Hilton' of the prisons. He was held 11 days before it was published in the newspapers. The prisoners had to be given tetanus shots because of their bayonet wounds. According to the doctors, Dr. Alvarez had four bayonet wounds in the shoulder and two bumps on the head. Among the people he accuses of mistreating the prisoners were Herman Marks and a Captain Carbonell, a negro. The prison authorities made the prisoners listen to the speeches of Fidel, and when the prisoners protested, they were beaten. The people who accused Dr. Alvarez were present in court when he was tried, and they were wearing 45s, to shoot him if he were freed. He was released, and escaped by lying on the floor of a car, eventually taking refuge in the Salvadoran Embassy..."
