Principal Activities:....The principal organizer of the AVBC was Jaime VARELA Canosa, a graduate of Mariel Naval Academy in Cuba, and of the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterrey, California. He served as Cuban Naval Attache in Mexico from February 1959 to March 1960, when he decided to defect to the U.S. He participated in the Bay of Pigs invasion as the Naval and Air Liaison Officer of Brigade Headquarters, was imprisoned in Cuba, and returned to the U.S. as one of the ransomed invasion prisoners in December 1962. The AVBC held its first election on 21 April 1963, with the following officers elected to serve for a term of one year. Thereafter, elections were to be held annually. AMTABBY-27 on 17 Jan 66 advised by Jose Alegrette that on 15 Jan Jaime Varela Canosa visited Alegrette contact Somoza to obtain permission for Varela and 'his group' use former AMBIDDY-1 camp Monkey Point. Varela stated 'his group' shortly to receive enough aid to start operations against PBRUMEN and would use AMBIDDY-1, Nicaragua camps as bases. 3. WAVE officer on 17 Jan contacted AMLITAINT-1 who long time friend Varela to determine whether any basis Varela statements. A-1 stated that had seen Varela last time Nov 65 at which time Varela stated he working with ODBEAT along with Peruyero of 2506 Brigade Vets Association. 4. WAVE Comment: (REDACTION) Varela former President 2506 Brigade Vets Association replaced by Peruyero. Varela also identified as ACSI source number 1002 as of 17 Jun 65. 5. In view of possible ODBEAT involvement WAVE not following suggestion para 3 Ref B to permit DIR check ODBEAT involvement. 6. For (REDACTION) Ref A forwarded info from AMTABBY-27 who approached by Peruyero, current President of Brigade 2506 Vets Association to join Peruyero as he obtained unspecified aid from unspecified ODYOKE agency which would permit association start operations against Cuba from PACY bases. Neither DIR (REDACTION) could confirm such aid."
