Cryptonym: AMHINT-8

Definition:
AMHINT-8 was the cryptonym for Carlos Duquesne Wylryez. A cable on April 11, 1961, stated that Carlos Duquesne's 201 number was 201-283951 (the first three digits in the second part are hard to distinguish but the last three are definitely 951).

The cable mentioned above also stated that Carlos Duquesne Wylryez was a DRE leader, and was a "WAVE trained general SAP ops." Other DRE leaders cited in this cable were Frank Bernardino Babot, Jose Raffo Barrera and Victor Espinosa Hernandez (AMHINT-24).

A FBI memo in October of 1960 stated that an FBI informant reported that the attack on the Cuban Consulate in Miami, during that month, "was carried out by individuals connected with the FRD, including one Carlos Duquesne (phonetic) who allegedly is a member of the FRD student group."

A cable on October 11, 1961, stated that AMHINT-8's 201 number was 201-283951. AMHINT-8 was active with John Koch Gene (AMHINT-26), and Manuel Baro Esteva (AMHINT-27), among others, in infiltration training for clandestine operations. In addition, a dispatch in October, 1962, mentioned that in September, Carlos DuQuesne was Trainee Number 3 of Militar infiltration ops training, with a salary of $125.00.

A cable on April 4, 1963, stated that AMHINT-8 reported on the 2nd that the DRE called a special meeting of its military section, in which the speaker, AMHINT-5 (Isidro "Chilo" Borja), said that there was an impasse in its relations with CIA. Borja continued that there was no alternative for the DRE, but to break relations with the Agency, and continue action against the Castro regime independently. AMHINT-8 also stated that in March, 1963, the DRE had withdrawn its funds from its account in the local bank.

A cable on April 12, 1963, stated that "JMWAVE efforts contact both AMSPELL (DRE) leaders and AMHINT-8 (AMSPELL "penetration") in order comply Ref A (DIR 32151) thus far unsuccessful." Moreover, a AMWORLD memo on December 24, 1963, mentioned that AMJAVA-4 (Rafael Quintero) was asked about seven ex-DRE members, and he stated that Carlos Duquesne was now with the MRR. John Koch was also believed to have moved to the MRR.

Alan Weberman, "The Oswald Code"

Weberman posits that it is possible that "Julio Fernandez" was Jose Lanusa (or another DRE member or ally). "Dr. Guillermo Belt, the former Cuban Ambassador to the United States from 1945 to 1947 advised the Washington Field Office of the FBI on November 26, 1963, that he had received a call from Jose Antonio Lanusa November 25, 1963 last, in connection Subject. Lanusa advised Subject appeared in Miami one or two months ago and attempted to infiltrate anti-Castro organization DRE. Subject stated he could train DRE members in guerrilla warfare to be used against Castro. Subject later observed in New Orleans passing out Communist literature and therefore labeled Communist and Castro supporter. DRE had nothing further to do with Subject. [FBI DL 89-43-699 NARA FBI 124-10159-10416] Jose Antonio Lanusa later retracted his statement that linked Oswald to Castro." 104-10002-10055: CONTINUING INVESTIGATION OF ALL PHASES OF OSWALD CASE. INFO ON DECLAN FORD, MARK LANE, THORNTON CAINE, PAUL D. BETHEL, ANGEL PEREZ, AND JOHN AND KATIA JACOBS

On Barry Gray's WMCA radio show in 1964, Paul Bethel stated that he "had heard from sources whom he trusted that Jack Ruby had been in Cuba several times on a clandestine basis subsequent to the United States break in relations with Castro. He had heard that these RUBY trips to Cuba might have had gambling connections centered around the Hotel Capri, in Havana, Cuba, whose front man was supposed to be George Raft, the movie actor. His sources had advised that Ruby had been in Cuba either two or three times, subsequent to the break in relations, in 1959 or 1960. One of the two sources whom he considered reliable as to Ruby's Cuban travel is Jose Lanuza (the z is underlined), whom he described as being affiliated with the Cuban Student Directorate (note: DRE/AMSPELL) in Miami, Florida (Miami telephone CA 1-5701). Bethel advised Lanuza could furnish information regarding the background of Lee Harvey Oswald and of his efforts to infiltrate the (DRE) group. As the second source, Bethel named Salvador Lew, who is associated with a Miami legal firm...On April 6, 1964, Bethel advised that another source to be contacted concerning information pertaining to Oswald and possibly to Ruby's trips to Cuba was Fernando Carandi, Miami, Florida..."
