Cryptonym: AMHINT-14

Definition:
Julio Hernandez Suarez. DRE member, who was infiltrated into Cuba prior to the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion. A CIA cable in May 1964 stated that he had been in a Cuban prison for three years.
Status:
Documented
Discussion:
Page two of 104-10170-10078 has a handwritten note that stated "201-289935 (Julio Hernandez Suarez)." This matches the handwritten note in 104-10181-10337 which says AMHINT-14's 201 number is 201-289935. Towards the end of 1960 he claimed to have set off four bombs at the University of Havana. Hernandez Suarez and other DRE members sought asylum in foreign embassies in Havana in May 1961. He claimed to have established the Youth Section of the MDC in an FBI report in November 1961. However, a CIA cable in May 1964 stated that he had been in prison for three years. Therefore, the possibility exists that it might have been someone else, but with the same name.

12/07/60, Dispatch from Chief of Base to Chief, WHD: Page 2: 4." By 3 December 1960, DRE action teams were committed throughout Cuba in sabotage and agitation. (See Attachment #8, References C and D). As usual, student action teams were moving faster than their own organizational ability and propaganda dissemination, as demonstrated in Attachment #9 where declarations by clandestine leaders of the DRE appear under the heading 'Directorio Revolucionario Universitario' which was actually the name of the prototype of the present-day DRE. The text of the attached declaration, well oriented and documented against International Communism in Cuba, has also been transmitted over the DRE radio program 'TRINCHERA' on Radio Swan. 5. One of the many exile student arrivals, Julio HERNANDEZ Suarez (attachment #10) in an interview with the Miami Herald stated that he had exploded four bombs during the speeches delivered at the 29 November meeting of pro-Castro students at the portals of the University of Havana."
