Bernardo Milanes Lopez, Castro’s mother’s doctor, recruited by Tony Sforza in Madrid in 1963. Part of a late 1963 plot to assassinate Fidel, Raul, and Che.

AMCROAK-1 was also part of the AMTURVY net. Later, Tony Sforza learned from Cubela’s father that Milanes ended up in the La Cabana prison where he and Cubela were the principal medical doctors for the prisoners there, 7/29/69. His bio file number was 201-738660.

October 1960: "Through Bernita Fernandez, Brand (AMPANIC-7) made contact with a very well-known physician, Dr. Bernardo Milanes. Though Brand had decided to discontinue operations, he recruited Dr. Milanes, who was willing to bring a group of about 30 of his fellow physicians to work with Cuba Libre."

12/5/63 - summary of MADR 9866 (see next entry), part of AMCROAK Operation 19-6-97. "AMCROAK-1 (Dr. Bernardo Milanes Lopez) discussed an operational plan with AMOT-2 (Joaquin Sanjenis Perdomo), which consisted of elimination of high (Government of Cuba) personalities. Milanes had not mentioned the plan to the case officer. (Milanes was recruited by CIA in Madrid in December 1963. At the time of recruitment he was involved with a group planning to kill Castro, a completely extra-CIA affiliation." Additional summaries continue from here.

12/05/63, Cable from Madrid to Director: Slugline RYBAT TYPIC COMMO AMCROAK: "1. Following from Sloman (probably Tony Sforza): A. Basis discussions WAVE CO with AMCROAK-1 and review debriefing AMOT-2 (Jose Joaquin Sanjenis Perdomo), CO satisfied AMCROAK-1's ardent desire assist in overthrow AMTHUG-1 (Fidel Castro) and sincere enthusiasm to assist CIA. AMCROAK-1 expressed necessity collect intelligence before any action be mounted and wishes dedicate his activities exclusively to intelligence collection. B. AMCROAK-1 proposed forming a net of 4 doctors and his wife. He and other doctors know disgruntled rebel army officers and/or wives though feel obligated to doctors. Wishes use wife, whom he describes as most courageous and having fought 4 years in Spanish Civil War, to copy OWVL. CO will obtain complete data on doctors and security review on all proposed individuals including AMCROAK-1. C. AMCROAK-1 expressed eagerness be trained all phases intelligence collection, reporting and commo. Stated best time receive OWVL between 8 and 9:30 AM. Only possible transmission hours between 9 and 11 PM. Indicated could transmit from his home in Nuevo Vedado or his consulting office. Claims in both sites has numerous places hide set, such as numerous pieces of large medical equipment, some of which are hollow. D. Since AMCROAK-1 stated he may only transmit in evenings, request HQs coordinate with NYXIS Div for release FSS-7 whose output necessary for evening transmissions. E. CO will continue debriefings and, thereafter commence training, which should be completed by evening 7 Dec. Suggest commo instructor arrived Madrid AM 7 Dec. Station will arrange passage through customs. F. AMCROAK-1 discussed op plan, mentioned previous cables, with AMOT-2. Plan consisted of elimination high GOC personalities. AMCROAK-1 has not mentioned plan to CO."

12/11/63, Cable from Madrid to Director: Slugline RYBAT TYPIC YOBITE AMCROAK: "1. Plan mentioned para 1 F Reference B concerns physical elimination AMTHUG/1 (Fidel Castro), AMLOUT/1 (Raul Castro) and AMQUACK/1 (Ernesto "Che" Guevara) although last two not considered important by planners. AMCROAK/1 stated there are 7 persons involved in plan and they have studied plan for past 8 months. Planners claim have one .30 cal machine gun, 2 M-1's, and 2 other rifles with ammo for all. They claim have 3 sites available which overlook places visited by 3 mentioned. Require 35,000 pesos to obtain one truck, two cars and places to hide after attempt. 2. CO advised AMCROAK/1 that ODYOKE (U.S. Government) does not look with approval upon these activities but that they would be passed on. A/1 would possibly be advised of the decision after his return to Cuba."

December 1963: "A CIA network made up of Bernardo Lucas Milanes, Roberto Cainas Milanes, Adela Nagle, Loreto Llanes Garcia, and others, planned an assassination attempt on Fidel Castro during a visit to the Potin cafe on Linea and Paseo in Vedado, Havana. The plot was to intercept the leader's fleet of cars when they stopped and to open fire on them with automatic weapons. After several weeks of surveillance, the operation was abandoned when Fidel Castro failed to show up."
