Cryptonym: AMBULL

Return to Main Crypts Page

Definition:
Unknown identity. AMBULL was described in a CIA Information Report in November 1956 as a "Cuban with good contacts in labor circles." Possibly involved in the cattle trade in Cuba.
Status:
Unknown
Discussion:
AMBULL was a CIA asset during the rule of Fulgencio Batista in Cuba, and was a source for the Agency in 1956 and 1957. Two reports from Havana in 1956 and 1957 were produced by John P. Kempton, and approved by Sherwood P. Rochon. Kempton was involved in Operation PBSUCCESS in Guatemala in 1954.

The source for a CIA Information Report from Havana, in April of 1959, was described as a "Cuban with good contacts among anti-Communist labor leaders." This was a similar description to the one mentioned above for AMBULL, although it may have been a different person.

04/09/59: CIA Teletyped Information Report: "COUNTRY: Cuba. DATE OF INFORMATION: 6 April 1959. PLACE ACQUIRED: Havana. SUBJECT: Communist Activities in the Confederacion de Trabajadores Cubanos (CTC - Cuban Workers' Confederation)...SOURCE (EVALUATION DEFINITIVE): Cuban with good contacts among anti-Communist labor leaders (B). "1. David Salvador, secretary-general of the Confederacion de Trabajadores Cubanos (CTC - Cuban Workers' Confederation), has ordered Reinaldo Pico (note: later assigned the cryptonym of AMICE-31) to make a pact with the Communist leader of the Bus Workers' Union. Pico, who was instrumental in defeating the Communists in several bus unions shortly after the overthrow of former dictator Fulgencio Batista on 1 January 1959, had refused to comply with Salvador's order as of 7 April 1959. 2. Pico is attempting to delay action until Reinol Gonzalez (note: later assigned the cryptonym of AMCALL-1), secretary of external relations for the CTC, returns from Mexico. At that time Pico, Gonzalez, and Jose Jesus Piana, legal secretary for the CTC, will urge Salvador to rescind his order. (Source Comment: Salvador either is cooperating with the Communists or is a Communist himself)."
