Documents in the JFK Collection Database have 13-digit record numbers of the form XXX-XXXXX-XXXXX, where the first 3 digits are a prefix which identifies the agency from which the document is derived. The table below identifies each prefix used in these records.

Record Numbers and Agencies

Note that the 3-digit record number prefix identifies the "releasing" agency; that is, the agency which was holding the record and released it to the National Archives. This is not always the same as the "originating" agency - the CIA (releasing agency) for example may be holding documents originally created by the FBI (originating agency).
