50th Anniversary Conferences

November 22, 2013 is the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Three prominent conferences this autumn will present research and discussion, and because it is the 50th they will have significant attendance and presenters.

Oct 17-19 the Wecht Institute of Forensic Science and Law will host a conference entitled Passing the Torch. The 40th anniversary conference there had over 1000 attendees and featured U.S. Senator and former Warren Commission staffer Arlen Specter among a host of prominent speakers. The DVD set Into Evidence records the presentations at that event.

This year's upcoming event's speaker list includes David Talbot, Robert McClelland, Josiah Thompson, Robert Tanenbaum, Joan Mellen, James Lesar, Larry Sabato, Lisa Pease, and many others. Breakout presentations will be given by Donald Thomas, Dan Hardway, Bill Kelly, and others.

See the registration page to register for this event, which will be held at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

On November 22, the city of Dallas is taking the unusual step of taking control of Dealey Plaza for a ticketed event entitled The 50th: Honoring the Memory of Preident John F. Kennedy. The remembrance ceremony will start at 11:45 am and run for about an hour, which includes the time of 12:30 when shots rang out 50 years earlier. A purchased ticket will be required to attend, and security procedures will apparently require a "background check."

The city's move has not been without controversy; members of the Coalition on Political Assassinations, which has been issued a permit for many years prior to 2013, met with Mayor Rawlings apparently to no avail. Many observers have decried the tight control exhibited this year.

The unfolding story of this event is being covered at jfkfacts.org.
