My birthplace is Mylapore, Madras City( Chennai), the Capital of India's southern State of Madras\Tamil Nadu. I am related to Dr. Radhakrishnan and have known him, his children, and grandchildren while I spent my early childhood in Madras. This visit happened at a very significant moment in independent India's history. During October\November 1962, India suffered a humiliating defeat when Communist China had brutally attacked India across its entire Himalayan frontier. U.S. President Kennedy had come to India's rescue and gave military, and economic assistance to face the challenge of Communist expansionism. India's Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was a strong proponent of a foreign policy known as Non-Aligned Movement and was not willing to openly embrace American military support. However, India had recognized the importance of the support extended by the Kennedy administration and Indian President had visited the United States to acknowledge India's sense of gratitude at that time of national crisis.
